Gus D. Avenger, this is a TRUE STORY. It happened one rainy day at the
St. Paul Hotel in North Beach back in 1998. Lest you ever wonder what wisecracks
they'll make about your pathetic ass when you've finally shuffled off this
mortal coil, here is what could happen to YOU if you don't get your shit
together in THIS lifetime !! -ed.
They found a body in the hotel lobby this morning and it happened on my floor just down the hall. Around the corner from where the showers are located. I could only imagine what was about to go on.The paramedics arrived and the usual managers were directing the firemen to the room at the end. One of the firemen said, "We'll have to go inside," and the manager unlocked the door. I heard from my room a fireman speak
into his walkie-talkie and say, "(Click!) D.O.A., looks to be four hours
at least. You'll have to send a Coroner out here when you can. (Click!) |
The police came by to
take statements from the hotel personnel and I can see from the donut shop
window the last policeman leaving the crime scene. It took only a couple
of minutes for them to whisk the body away & seal the room shut. "I
heard a cop radio in that the room was locked & secured for now. I
heard the manager joke with one of the tenants, "Wanna see a dead body?
Only a dollar a peek! (laughs)"
He and the others laughed to relieve the pressure. I guess we all need to laugh a little, or cry, about our our situation from time to time. Especially to end the misery & ennui of Thanksgiving and the day after. I've never had the pleasure of enjoying a full Thanksgiving Day, nor a full Christmas Day, for that matter. All my Thanksgiving and Christmas Day's have been for shit. They have no relevance to me, or to anything I possess. I've got to get some kind of life or I'll probably end up like some casualty in a hotel room : alone, freezing cold, and very much as dead as a fucken doornail. My life was almost not ever there to begin with, like so many things in San Francisco. My thing was just survival, day to day, week by week, knowing SF is a city that can't be beat.

You have to go it alone,
& go along with the game plan, or suffer the consequences. I guess
this guy learned the hard way. Now his body remains, anonymous. And the
people in this stinkin' hotel are closer for it, for this dead body, and
the managers perhaps are wondering why this had to be. Or not. Maybe they're
just pissed, and wishing this had happened in somebody else's hotel.
Everyone got a wake-up call that
morning, including myself -which was a surprise. I guess I can feel that
what happened was a blessing in disguise, or a human tragedy that might
have been prevented. But actually, I don't feel a God-damned thing !
Oh well, maybe tomorrow....
